American Style Smooth Dance commonly comes in one of four kinds - the popular fox-trot, the tango, the waltz and the Viennese waltz. The waltz is a round dance that follows the 3 x 4 time with the accent being on the first beat of each measure. There is a lot of gyrating motion involved, and the tempo is usually pretty fast. The foxtrot is a dance in the double time, and they have short and quick running steps, walking steps and two-steps. Under the International style Latin dance come the much admired Cha-cha, the Samba and the Rumba. The Cha-Cha is a fast and rhythmic dance that follows a three-step shuffle pattern. The Samba famously, is a Brazilian dance that originally came from Africa. It involves steps of happy bouncy moves in double time with much knee bending. And the Rumba is a dance from Cuba.
Ballroom dancing lessons in any of these are likely to give you skills in dancing in general that you could carry over to any style you choose to specialize in.
