Workouts From 1950 - 1970
From the 1950s when Jack LaLanne first hit the airwaves in his blue jumpsuit, through the late 1970s with Richard Simmons, into the 80s era of legwarmers and sweatbands with Jane Fonda to today, the home exercise video market has grown leaps and bounds. Fitness is a rapidly growing multi-billion dollar industry. Even with the current economic crisis, industry predictors believe the home fitness market segment will continue to grow while exercisers opt for home workouts instead of renewing their gym membership.
Jack LaLanne, also known as the "godfather of fitness" first hit the airwaves in 1951. His fitness television show was a national sensation and ran for over thirty years until 1985. He was a pioneer in the home fitness industry and paved the way for many fitness instructors to follow. This year jack LaLanne will celebrate his 96th birthday and credits his lifelong love of fitness and nutrition to his longevity.
In the 1970s, after fighting his own weight loss battle and losing over 100 pounds, Richard Simmons opened his first health and fitness center. His exuberant personality and health club success led to many television appearances and eventually his own TV show. He has produced countless exercise videos and has helped several people lose the pounds over the last thirty years. He is well-known for his Sweatin' to the Oldies workouts which feature great music to keep you moving and motivated.
Workouts From 1980 - 1990
Aerobics video workouts can't be mentioned without visions of legwarmers, leotards and Jane Fonda. In the 1980s, Jane Fonda popularized aerobics and brought exercise video to the masses with her first workout Jane Fonda's Workout released in 1982. The workout started a movement not just of aerobics but working out at home. The workout went on to sell more than 17 million copies. With the VCR now making its way into many homes, the home exercise video market began to grow.
The 1980s also gave rise to newcomer Denise Austin who co-hosted the Jack LaLanne Show, in 1981. In 1982, she began her own television program and released her first two workout videos. From 1984 to 1988, she was also the fitness expert on NBC's Today Show. Denise has gone on to make many other fitness videos and has appeared on several early morning exercise programs.
The 1990s saw the arrival of step aerobics, Susan Powter and the ThighMaster. With FCC deregulations in the mid- to late eighties, the infomercial was a medium that further catapulted the growth of the home fitness industry. In the 1990s, the infomercial continued to spread the word about various workouts and exercise equipment available to the home exerciser. Many instructors began to flood the market. Home video workouts were no longer being made just for beginners or women. Many advanced workouts began to make it to video. The Firm, Beachbody, Cathe Friedrich are just a few home video instructors or programs that achieved popularity in the 1990s.
There are a wide range of disciplines that have made it to exercise video from its humble beginnings of aerobics to kickboxing, yoga, Pilates, dance, MMA, kettlebells, strength training and spinning. Today with reality shows like The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Fit Club popular celebrity trainers are reaching many more home exercisers. They have also entered the realm of home video workouts producing their own workouts made with the home exerciser in mind.
Workouts: Today and Beyond
Home exercise workouts made the jump from programs on the television to VHS and then DVDs. Today many workouts are available as digital downloads or can be streamed live on your home computer. Many new to market instructors feature workouts on YouTube as a way to gain popularity. There are websites available that offer reviews, breakdowns and clips of many exercise workouts. With so many choices available today, there is no reason home exercise can not be an option. Check out a workout today, these aren't your grandmother's workouts.
