Ballet is a dance form that requires hours of constant practice to get the steps just right. Most ballet steps need to be performed repeatedly to ensure the right stance and effect. Beginners should also keep in mind that over - enthusiastic practice may lead to painful feet and injuries. Ballet steps are easy to perform if broken down into simple constituent steps. One of the first steps taught to the ballet novice is the demi-plie. This is a step done on two counts with the knees half-bent. One must pay attention to the back and shoulders. Both should be straight up. A ballet bar helps maintain posture while doing demi-plies. The step has five variants and should be practiced in each of those five positions.
The next step is the grand plie. In this step the knees are fully bent and have a total of eight counts. You are to devote four counts going down and four while coming up. In full bend the heels are to be lifted from the floor and they are set on the floor as one passes to the standing position. You may note that the demi plie forms a part of the grand plie as well as you go up and down. Beginners should pay attention to correct posture in this ballet step as well.
As a beginner, it is important to do exercises that strengthen the feet and help develop your arch. You should not do this unless instructed by your teacher. The teacher will check if you are ready to take on such exercises and advice you accordingly. Battlement tendus are one of the exercises done to improve leg and foot strength. In this, your weight is concentrated on the ball of the supporting foot. You will then have to slide the dominant foot smoothly to the position in front, move to the next position on the side and finally slide the foot to the back. The foot has to slide in a direct line.
These steps should be practiced over and over again to get them perfect. The most important thing in ballet is your posture. Don't stress yourself in the first few sessions but continue to practice patiently.
